Pong, Dartmouth Style

Well, the other day, I got bored, and decided I was going to do some programming. I debated which classic arcade game I was going to try to rip off, and after realizing that the 3D graphics of Battlezone, despite being only wireframes, were beyond my grasp at the moment, and that collision detection for Asteroids would be a bitch, I settled on Pong as an easy project. I decided, however, to spice things up a bit, by adapting the classic game of Pong by including that staple of Dartmouth College life, Solo cups of Keystone Light. The inclusion of beer into Pong has led to some interesting gameplay mechanics. For instance, as you lose more cups, your paddle speed decreases, to simulate the effect of guzzling terrible beer. Also, at some point, I'm going to make it so that the more (simulated) beer you've drunk, the higher the chance that the controls will not respond as you mash on them.

Admittedly, the aesthetic quality of the game is rather low at the moment, as you can see from the screenshot. I'll work on that, later, once the code is all correct. I mean, I would rather get the physics down pat, instead of the heinous approximation I'm using at the moment. Pretty paddles can wait. Anyway, once I get this polished up, I'll probably put it up on GameDev.net for download, although you'll be fucked if you download it and don't have python and pygame.

Hell, if I get ambitious, I might change it from straight line to bush, shrub, or maybe even ship. Multiplayer would elevate time-wasting to a high art, I think. Ah, there is pure, solid gold in this I think.

So, anyway, the list of things to do is:
  • Fix the physics so they don't rely on random shit
  • Add some menus and such
  • Spruce up the graphics
  • Add multiplayer capability
  • Invent some bullshit AI to play against
